Its always blue, unless there are clouds. Im familiar.) The world is a mess and life is full of disaster and disappointment. Why fight it?
This is why all of the best movies and books are tragedies, with very few exceptions. Think about it. Think even of a s film like Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original, not the Burton one that blames everything on childhood dentistry or something, to let us know that it all could have been avoided, zzzzz): lots of songs and bright colors, but its dark and twisted. The title character has shut himself off from the world and invites the in only because he wants an heir. Most of the are spoiled brats. Spies are trying to steal his secrets. Most of his products are really bad for you. And for some reason, its directed like a TV movie. Then theres the oompa loompas.
The truth is that the vast majority of the people whove ever lived would agree that life is tragic and bleak. It only seems otherwise because we have to put up with the various forms of neo-puritanism that would tell us otherwise. But then the U.S. has always been a land of extremists and crackpots, all of them trying to convert you to their new religion. Of course, theyll insist it isnt religion, or that its not just religion, or that its actually the opposite of religion (All hail, Dr. Science). Yeah, yeah. Our religions arent religions, our wars are just self-defense, we really need all the stuff we have, and we have no tendency to go on sadomasochistic witch-hunts at home and abroad.
Did you ever wonder, if those positive thinkers (of whatever strain) were so positive, why they dont just shut up about it? Why they have such a need to win converts? Some of them have been at it for years and years; youd think theyd just be enjoying their thoughts by now. They talk about it because they dont really believe it themselves, most of them, and theyre terrified of being honest about anything. Theyre such brown-nosers that even when theres no authority around, they assume that God is listening and they go for the extra credit.
For another example, another movie: Shutter Island (spoiler alert not something you usually see in a slist ad): Leo plays a U.S. marshal whos trying to get to the bottom of experiments at a creepy asylum on an island off Boston. Or is he? Were told that he helped liberate the camps at the end of WWII, then lost touch with reality because of personal tragedy. Hes really a patient at the asylum, and the whole things an elaborate role-play, a last-ditch effort to save this lost soul. It doesnt work, and as he walks off for his lobotomy, he asks, is it better to die a good man or live as a monster?
The really sad thing, though, is that this is not the real solution to the puzzle. This is just the surface plot thats necessary to get the average bumpkin to watch the film. Really, the Leo character represents the U.S, sure of its own righteousness in the wake of WWII. The tragedies and the activities at the asylum represent all the evil the U.S. has committed since then, eroding whatever goodness it once had (well of course the authorities deny it every happened). But like the character, the U.S. remains convinced of its own goodness, because the reality is just too hard to take. And yes, I watch a lot of movies, and yes I prefer that or reading to talking to most people.
